Synthetic Chemistry
Safety
- Risk Assessment Form
- When to fill out a risk assessment form and keep in your yellow binder?
- Strong base (e.g. alkyllithium, Grignard reagent, LAH, NaH, KH)
- Reactive metal (e.g. alkali metal, KC8)
- Strong acid (e.g. conc. HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, aqua regia)
- Toxic gas (e.g. H2S, CO, NO)
- Acutely toxic liquid or solid (e.g. Me3SiCHN2, Hg(CH3)2, OsO4, CH3OTf, conc. HF, Fe(CO)5)
- Explosive or low-autoignition-point compound (e.g. CH2N2, NaN3)
- Radioactive materials (e.g. 57Co, 3H)
- If the compound is used inside the glove box, the RAF should discuss how to bring waste out and quench it.
- In subsequent iterations of the same hazard, consult the previous RAF in your yellow binder.
